It comes to mind as I read and reread in the bundles of fading letters left behind by my departed parents in several antiquated and crumbling bookkeeping folders of early-twentieth century design. Almost erased by the span of 65 plus years, a memory arises of my parents hastily gathering up two suitcases, and being bundled off, with me and my brother, in an automobile to leave our home forever. This occurred late in the afternoon or early in the long evening on a sunny May 14, 1940—several hours after the Dutch army had laid down its arms against the German invaders of the Netherlands (Holland, for short). The official capitulation of the Netherlands was to come on the next day.
